Since these cars are "fly-by-wire", ie: there's no mechanical link between the gas pedal and the throttle on the engine, I'd guess that any problems would be electronic, like with a sensor or positioner on the throttle body. I doubt that most of these cars have enough miles on them for the throttle shaft or bushings to be physically worn enough to stick or leak vacuum.
After suggestions were made that it could be the TB, I tried running the 9-3 in "sport" mode to see if it made any difference. My understanding is that engaging the sport switch on the shift knob changes the way the TB responds to inputs from the gas pedal. The problem seemed to go away when I tried it in sport mode, which supports the idea that it's TB rather than DI cassette. I'm going to try that for quite a few miles before I draw any conclusions.
I guess I could just bite the bullet and take it to the dealer for diagnosis, but if it turns out to be the DI, I don't want to pay full retail for the part and the dealer's labor rate, which is currently $98.50 an hour!
