I'll stick with 5,000 mile oil and filter changes for now, even with Mobil 1 0W-40. I am mainly concerned about fuel contamination and condesation in the oil from frequent short trips. I think the oil itself will easily go 10,000 miles. If i drove more freeway (like a 25 mile each way commutte) I would extend the drain interval.
As far as MINI, they will only pay for the 12,000 mile changes. So I will need to pay to have the oil and filter changed at roughly 1/2 that, or 5-7,000 miles.
One reason I like synthetic oil is even if you forget an oil change (or are on a long road trip) and run over the change interval by 1000 miles, it is no big deal.
