your knees. When the feds mandated antitheft mechanism in all cars a long time ago, most automakers did the cheap thing and put a lock on the steering column. Saab choose to lock the transmission to meet the regulators mandate, which is by the way a little harder to defeat than the column locks. So, you can thank Uncle Sam for putting the key on the floor. Methinks the safety rationale was cooked up later to hang on to some "We are different" marketing noise. By the comments here, it may well work. There is no reason why Saab cannot put the key back on the dash, or anywhere else, as it was for years in their first cars, and do it safely for impacts in accidents. Transmissions are electronic now, at least the automatics, and so can be locked with a servo mechanism triggered from anywhere.
