C'mon folks. Here are the numbers for things we consider scandinavian. Saab and IKEA.

% of scandinavian content in a 1980 C900 as a portion of selling price: 67%
% of scandinavian content in a 2003 9-3 SS, as a portion of selling price: 48%

Does this mean Saab has been diluted ? NO ! The difference is in the fact that the 1990 car took over 100 hours more to build than the 2003 car. That's 100 hours of very expensive Swedish labor. And the content is different. My 1980 900T did not even come with a radio, let alone bluetooth ! In terms of parts, there are more parts built on-site in the 2003 than in the 1990, with onsite engine and gearbox plants.

For your amusement. consider IKEA
% of scandinavian content in a 1990 IKEA warehouse in Canada as a portion of selling price: 66 %
In 2003: 20%

Do we view IKEA as less Swedish ? I don't think so. Even though it is Canadian wood, Canadian handicapped workers, even Canadian designers in some cases.

It's what you do with the parts that is important. Not where you get them from. Saab and GM will have to figure it out or disappear. And yes, a hatchback is part of what makes a Saab in my opinion.
