I had a 1999 HOT 5 speedfor 3 years, and my wife had a 1998 NG900 SE turbo 5 speed convertible at the same time. I literally drove it on EVERY grade of fuel you can think of. 85(when in Colorado)/87/89/91/92/93.

In every case, in BOTH cars the 93 produced the most torque/pwer/FTD (Fun To Drive), BOOST whatever MOST describes POWER to you and your SAAB.

And 85 was miserable--and in fact SAAB has released a bulletin, per Greg Netzner, that does NOT recommend 85 octane at altitude driving. thanks Greg!!

I think the 185 hp trubo engine I had in my 1996 SET actually said 87 octane--but it was very sluggish. Later manuals seem to refer to 90 AON for the 185 hp. if that helps.

Additionally, keep in mind that octane requirements of an engine change with time/miles.

SAAB has posted in my 2002 9-3 and my 2002 9-5 AERO owners manuals to use 92/93 octane in temps over 75(? or might be 77 ? F) to reduce preignition (spark knock). Right now @ 24 F temps in Michigan, 89 mid grade is just fine (hard to race in snow tires) and 77 is just a memory.

Lower octane gasolines --87/89--provide quicker start-ups here in the cold as lower octanes ignite easier than premium fuel. So if you are in Buffalo NY, or St. Saint Marie, Michigan, this could be the tip you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Run on 89 for a few tnakfulls and see what you think. I think the prevailing wisdom of most of this BB wil advise they run on Premium--no matter what the owners manual says.
