There is a Russian car magazine that does annual winter tire tests and publishes detailed reports. They tested Arctic Alpins a couple of years ago and found them very poor in deep snow. These tires excel at most other things winter throws at you but not deep snow! Maybe the Bimmer had Gislaveds or Hakkas?! And a limited slip rear? I am not sure about the Focus but he might have used Bimmer's tracs...
Also, you TCS may be screwing you up in situations where wheelspin may be beneficial (such as deep snow.) Did you try it with TCS off?
