To simplify what they are:
Torque: Imagine a stuck bolt with a one foot long wrench attached and a one pound weight on the end, this is one foot/pound. Even though nothing is moving, the force is still there.
Horsepower: At the above state, there is zero hp, since nothing is moving and no work is being done. A VERY simplified description of Hp is multiplying the above with how many RPM's the wrench is turning at. Hence the same ammount of torque at a low rpm results in low hp, and the same torque at high rpm's results in high hp.
Unless you want to drive around at high rpm's, it's nice to have large ammounts of torque at low rpms to help you accelerate.
