Emergency Braking

Hello all
just a quick question to check that all is normal...as I am almost sure it is.
Had cause for my first emergency braking manoeuvre today (only have 10k km on my 2002 9-3 so far) - another driver cut right into my path from the left side today (on the phone?) - I was doing approx. 30kmh / 20mpg (i.e. not fast) - only saw the car at the last moment. Hit the brakes hard - as I recall it was hard...then softened up..then I felt a sort of grating that I guess was the abs kicking in - the wheels locked (squeeled on the road) but I came to a dead-stop on a sixpence...which I guess is about the same size as a nickel.
My question is about the hard...soft...grate pedal sequence - apologies for being so untechnical in my description. Is this normal? (had the car in for its first service a couple of weeks ago - all was fine)
As I say, the car stopped dead (the other car just carried on and headed off to the right - a deeply impressive piece of poor driving) and I carried on thinking how much I really do like my Saab.
