I worked as a car detailer (everything was done by hand and we only worked on high end cars for an exclusive clientelle) full time during my first two years of college. Car washes are bad. Period.
HOWEVER, in the winter I run my car through brushless washes twice in places that rinse the undercarriage. I feel it does more harm to leave salt all over the underside of the car than to expose your car to the high ph and aggressive detergents that car washes use. With a rag top, I would make sure to hose off the top after running the car through a wash. If you don't live in an area where salt/sand is an issue then I would do everything by hand. Using a hose on the underside is too difficult and won't get everything that a non-touch car wash does. We routinely recommended to our clients that they drive their cars through a non-touch wash once per year and then hand wash it afterwards.
I had a 92 900T convertible that provided me 11 years of faithful service that I got rid of last year. It looked as good as the day it was picked up when I sold it.
