9-3SS Rear Speaker Upgrade Question

Due to the lack of bass/sound from the rear speakers, I have added Pioneer 6x9's and disconnected the small speakers and ran the cable to the new speakers. No change in bass.
I've heard that it might be that the head unit is not sending a low frequency to the rear. Is there a way I can achieve more low frequency to the rear or will adding a seperate amplifier solve this?
Thanks,
Allen G.
