Saab started water cooling turbos in '88 ( i believe ) That was the year of a my first, a 900 SPG, and man i wish i still had it!!! This really extended the turbo life beyond just oil and oil cooling. Everything everyone has said is pretty much true. This business about 2 minutes is nuts. If i recall (i sold it 4 years ago) my SPG said right on the driver's side visor to allow cool down for 30 seconds. Older turbos were heavier by nature and design -- high rotational inertia. So when you cruised into your parking spot after enthusiastic driving and shut the car off, the heavy turbo would continue to rotate at high RPM. It's partly the reverse problem of worse turbo lag on older turbos....they took longer to spool up and longer to spool down. If you shut the older cars down without cool down, it's likely your turbo was spinning away with zero oil pressure. Whammo.
Newer turbos are light and have a much lower inertia (mass). Hence they spool up faster AND spool down faster. It never hurts to allow some cool down, but it's not nearly as critical as it is in the older. I usually just ensure that i'm loafing the last little bit of my ride-- do you really need to blast into a parking spot?? Always use synthetic oil. And for good measure just let it idle a bit...use the few seconds to make sure you've got your stuff in order for the next launch.
regards,
Hec
