I've done a similar cut-em-up (NINES 237, interestingly the #1 Google Pick under "Purolator Oil Filters" at http://www.saabclub.com) and I had no such issues with the Saab/Delco filter. I did NOT find the filtering media to be "thin" but to the contrary, it was fatter and seemed of higher quality than most, including the hallowed MANN filters. I found the internal construction to be simple but effective, especially for squeezing lots of filter into a small space. My concern was (and still is) the location of the bypass valve - seems to me you risk sweeping debris off the surface of the filter when the bypass opens, but not the construction or operation of the valve. Note that the MANN filter bypass is at the back end of the filter as well.
Also remember, NO ONE BUT NINES (and AC Delco, where we received our data) has ever published a competative oil filter analysis which includes real live measured performance data (and sadly results for the only two filters we really care about are now missing - the Delco Gold which was the best and is no longer made, and the Saab OE filter, which is still made but wasn't tested).
