I'm no expert on exhaust systems, but...
I can't see how splitting a single exhaust path into a Y with two downstream exhaust paths (complete with cats and mufflers) could be a good thing. The system is more restricted this way, so it takes more energy to push the exhaust through (guess where the energy comes from).
Dual exhausts are useful when they feed off two different engine exhaust outputs (as in a V or a boxer, or an inline-6). In that case, you avoid additional restriction by trying to force the two routes together. The Saab I-4 exhausts on one side only.
Two exhaust tips next to each other (as in some of the OEM Viggen sports exhaust variants) is a completely different story. That's just for looks, and has very little functional effect, good or bad. Other elements of the sports exhaust (lower restriction cat, big pipes) however, do have appreciable advantages.
Hope this clears things up.
