Broken door handle

I got home, pulled the handle to open the door. There was a loud spppooooiiinnnngggg!!!! sound, and now the door release doesn't seem to be connected to anything. Can anyone tell me how hard this is to replace. Also, my saab came with the plastic handles. Are the metal ones metal all the way through? Do they last longer? This is a car with only 60K miles on it and I look fairly stupid rolling the window of my fine European convertible down to stick my hand out and open the door with the outside handle. Thanks in advance for any and all help.
