From the standpoint of clearance, you are correct. But in terms of cleanliness I find it much easier to change the filter when the filter is mounted sideways like on the 9-3, not "threads up" as on our '00 OBW. Also, on the OBW, after removing the "access panel" to gain access to the drain plug, there is still a good chance of getting oil all over the place. While the Subie IS still very easy to change the oil in, I find it easier, cleaner and less time consuming on my SAAB.
