9-3 SS Question: Room Around the Feet (My poor shoes)

I visited the local Saab dealer this weekend and was happy to see that the 9-3 SS models on the lot seemed to have been cured of some of the annoyances I came across when I test drove the car in late 2002 (e.g. sound system usability is improved, arm rests are now leather rather than cloth).
However, I found that as I switched between the gas pedal and the brake, the right side of my shoe would rub against the plastic along the column to the right of my leg. With time, I can see this contact wearing away the leather on the shoe. It also makes the drive less comfortable. I had noticed the same thing during my test drive last year. The person with whom I went to the dealer also noticed this problem.
My shoes are a size 11.5 (US) and I haven’t had this problem in other cars in this size range, so I don't think it's an issue relating solely to my size.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, have you found a way to work around it?
