DIY VRK bushing installation...

Yes, it can be done. I installed the Abbott bushings a few weekends ago when I was replacing my brake pads and rotors.
For the control arm bushing on one side I used a two-arm gear puller and a large socket instead of a hydraulic press: this worked pretty well, but only pushed out the inner rubber part of the bushing. To get the hard metal sleeve out, I needed to resort to a hacksaw and a hammer and punch. The hacksaw was used to carefully cut through just the bushing sleeve (not into the aluminum of the control arm!), and the punch was used to deform the sleeve and then punch it out. I used an ancient mechanical press to remove the remianing bushings, but even then needed to resort to a hackssaw to remove the other sleeve too.
A lot of muscle is needed to wrestle the ball joints out of their position. Given a choice, I would gladly pay someone a hundred bucks to do all the grunting, swearing, and beer drinking I engaged in to complete this project! For those as cheap and stupid as I am, I have included a link to my website with more detailed project instructions.
Best,
Lutfisk
