I'm still thinking about what I want to do with my DRLs. The goal is to be able to drive with the switch in the 0 position with the DRLs on, but to have some control over the headlights when I need to. For example, when approaching a security gate, or when entering a drive-in movie theater, it is courteous to turn off your headlights, but you still have to be able to make the car move!
The standard solutions (pull fuse or normal tech II) won't work, because they require you to drive with the switch in the 2 position to have headlights on. In the daytime, I don't like this, because the interior lights don't adapt to ambient conditions the same way they do when the switch in the 0 position.
I've been thinking about wiring a switch into one of the blanks on the dash. The switch would be in-line with fuse 15. This way, I'd have six possible combinations of switches. The functionality (when running) would be:
1) pos 0, switch on: all lights on, fogs disabled, interior lights good
2) pos 0, switch off: all lights off, fogs disabled, interior lights good
3) pos 1, switch on: all lights on, fogs disabled, interior lights ?
4) pos 1, switch off: all lights on, fogs disabled, interior lights ?
5) pos 2, switch on: all lights on, fogs enabled, interior lights bad
6) pos 2, switch off: all lights on, fogs enabled, interior lights bad
I'd usually drive in pos 0, switch on, except when I need to turn the lights off (pos 0, switch off), or when I need the fogs or brights (pos 2).
My next question is, is there any way to get one of the positions to be parking lights only, while maintaining pos 0, switch on DRL functionality? With the standard Tech II change that people get, pos 0, switch on would get me parking lights only. I want the full DRLs for normal driving.
So, what I really need is
(1) a confirmation that there is really a third tech II mode for the DRLs on a '99 9-3
and (2) an explanation of what lights are on and off, with and without fuse 15, in that third mode
or (3) another suggestion entirely
Can anyone help?
