Hey Chas,
Here's a picture of a 9-5 owner's oil filter after 5k miles on the factory fill oil. Saab may have new procedures for getting this stuff out before they ship the 9-3SSs, but I'd sure rest easier by changing it now. Just don't reset the OLM & have the dealer change it again when it would "normally" say so (unless, of course, it says so right after you change it!).
I believe the filter for your car is a "drop-in cartridge," which may mean it's only available thru the dealer right now.
Since only Saab full syn 0W-30 & Mobil 1 0W-40 meet the new car's "Long Life" oil specs, use one of those while you're still in warranty if you're going to be relying on the OLM (& ONLY use fully synthetic oil of ANY brand/viscosity). For any turbo, I feel the better high Temperature/High Shear protection of an ACEA A3 rated oil is the best choice, & of the two spec'd oils only M1 0W-40 has the A3 rating.
