I've been trying to diagnose and fix a very annoying sound that seems to originate from the area of the lock mechanism on the driver's door.

When I start from a standstill at a good clip I hear fairly loud click as something shifts, and when I stop somewhat quickly I hear the same click. Whatever causes this also rattles when going over significantly rough pavement.

I've removed the door panel and noticed that the vertical metal pole that extends up from the latch mechanism on the side of the door and has the plastic knob screwed on top of it has some wear on the sides as if it might be what is moving around. Unfortunately there is not much room to work in there to put some foam or other padding. I put some duct tape around the area where the clicking is but this has only slightly helped (on a positive note I believe I'm on the right track now).

So, is there a fairly easy way to dismantle the latch mechanism so that I can temporarily remove this metal pole to add padding either to it or the space in which it resides? Am I going to mess something up if I take a torx screwdriver and just remove the door latch since I assume that's where this metal bar leads to?

On a side note, the service manager at Jim Ellis SAAB in Atlanta (never make accusations if you're not willing to name names) said "oh, it's the seat belt pretensioner". LOL. As soon as I heard that I knew it was time to figure out how to remove the door panel myself.
