New tires not balanced properly?

Just had a set of 4 Potenza RE950's installed by the local Firestone Tire center. I noticed that the weights used were these little wafers that attach on the middle of the wheel (5-spoke '02 SE wheels) with adhesive instead of on the edge of the rim like I'm used to. Driving home I'm getting vibration at various speeds (most noticeable during acceleration, cruising around 75mph on the interstate, and anything faster. It is mild, but noticeable and doesn't feel right.
Is it possible that the tires weren't balanced properly? How do they screw that up? Are tires balanced for certain lower speeds and not checked at higher speeds? I drive 75 most of my commute and I gotta have it fixed.
Thanks for the help!
