Anyone blown a speaker from amp pop?

I ordered a PopStopper by Stinger on the recommendation of another poster -- but the e-tailer I used (Autosoundgear.com) never sent it. They only charged my credit card. So I have a loud pop every time I turn off the speakers, sometimes accompanied by a squealing of differing frequencies, sort of like a car skid or, if you'll excuse me, a fart.
Is the noise generated by this turn-off from a 35 watt/channel amp strong enough to blow 80 watt dual-cone JBL 6x9" speakers? I turned on the stereo after an especially loud pop the night before, and the bass is very staticy, like smaller cheap computer speakers. I checked most of the connections (some of them are buried in tape or inside the dash), and all seemed fine. I've never heard a blown speaker before, but that's what I imagine it would sound like. Interestingly, the same poor sound quality comes from both rear speakers, even though the humungous fart noise came primarily from the right.
Thanks for your help!
Cory
