Lots of people have told me I'm nuts for buying a car on ebay and I imagine there has been bad experiences had by some. But not here!
In order to justify a sale "undriven" you have to know a lot about the brand you're looking at. I've been driving Saabs for over 25 years and you are obviously well informed - look where you're hanging out!
I also make it a rule to pay about thirty to forty percent less than book value so in the event there is something wrong with the vehicle, known or unknown by the seller, you can absorb that cost and not feel like you got screwed. I paid $5,600.00 less than book value for my 9-3S and it has been the best car I ever owned.
Do we take a chance? Yes. Are we better or worse off than those that insist on only "Certified" used Saabs that they test drive? I don't think so. Remember, they are paying for that comfort level, and that's fine. Other people are guaranteed one thing - they will put that money out regardless if they use it or not, whereas we will only put money out if something major goes wrong. Like anything else in life there is a certain amount of unknown with this type of sale. Just as there is unknown with a sale that you drive first. When you really examine it, problems with a used vehicle rarely reveal themselves on a test drive. It's only after the sale that unseen problems become apparent.
And let's not forget, if the car is not everything the seller says it is, you have the right to walk away from the sale, although you may have to sue to recoup your deposit. The shop that did the rebuild should also have a reasonable warranty on their parts and labor.
So don't sweat it! Looks like the Houston Saabers are going have to get together soon just so we can gawk at your new ride.
Congrats, have fun on the road trip and be careful on I-10 on the way home - that's the most dangerous part of this transaction!
