Not to rain on your parade, but is this really neccessary? I mean, when was the last time you had a blowout? In my 14 years of driving I've never had a flat, and even if I did, I'd put the spare on and get a new tire the next day. That's why it's there...it's a SPARE!

Why add all that weight and go through the time and effort to build a custom full-size spare compartment?

Car and Driver did a test a few years back on compact spares. Basically they put the spare on several high performace cars and put the cars on a "severe use" test (skidpad, threshold braking, small road course). In every case, the tires performed just fine, dropping performance numbers by a few seconds, feet, or .g, but nothing to write home about. No failures even when abused. Basically, it was concluded that the manufacturer's warnings are VERY conservative, and this applied to the speed rating as well. I mean, you can go 70MPH on one, it's not like it's building up heat exponentially after 55MPH. If you're going to replace your tire anyways, who needs a full size spare unless you're an SUV?
