Thanks for the email - I appreciate your input, but there is still a GM involvement. It's still a chassis designed for more than one car/manufacturer. I understand how incredibly expensive it is to design and engineer a car from ground up, and perhaps this was decided to lower the cost of the Saabs?(um...I don't think so - this was GM's attempt to get more bang for the buck). Why should such a innovative and intelligent company as Saab need the help of Opel(GM)? GM owns Saab = GM does what they like with Saab. The previous generation 9-3 was almost a joke of a car - the new one was 4 years overdue.
My other Saab is a 1990 900s. This car screams unique and drives like no other car. I have to try hard to put in the back of my mind the fact that my 9-5 shares the same "bones" as the Saturn whatever, Opel whatever and whoknowswhatever else.
It's just like Jaguar and Ford - would you buy the Jaguar X-Type if I told you that it shares the same chassis as the Taurus?
Hey, I'm sure the Opel engineers are quite compitent - I've driven the new 9-3 and am overall VERY pleased, but still...I think you get my drift.
Cheers.
