My 2000 Viggen convertible is doing the same at 33k miles.
The diagnostics machine at Saab City pointed the engineer to the throttle body. The engineer’s synopsis is that the airflow sensor in the throttle body has failed, and since the ECU cannot monitor airflow to the engine it drops into 'limp home' mode.
This is what causes the stalls at idle, shuddering and slow response. (Probably programmed in deliberately to make the driver aware of a potential serious engine fault).
I am told that failed airflow sensor is installed in the throttle body and not separately replaceable. The entire unit needs replacing, at a cost of £700.00p.
(I also have a slight vibration or reluctance / resistance when I depress the accelerator pedal gently).
I have done a bit of poking around and many people have successfully cleaned their throttle body with carburettor cleaner. (I take no responsibility suggesting this as an option, I’m just saying what I’ve read - I don’t know how cleaning would affect the sensor if is in working condition).
The common cause of the problems I’ve heard and read about is a build up of burnt fuel deposits in the throttle body itself. It would seem to me that this build up is the result of another problem.
It would be unusual though if you didn’t have an engine light or error code on though all this.
