I went from an '86 9000 to a '99 9-3, and I'm doing fine...but then, I don't have a family.
Are you talking about new or used (ie, 9-3SS or hatch)? The 9-3 hatch isn't as well-designed as the old 9000, so it doesn't fold as flat. Still, it's a nice big space.
As far as passenger space, my mom drives an Infiniti G20t (old, smaller style). When my sister and I were still living at home, it fit the family just fine, and it's smaller than a 9-3. (The other family car at the time was the 9000 that eventually became mine, until it was also uneconomical to repair.)
If I had a family right now, and if I were buying a new car, I'd want the 9-3SportHatch. If I couldn't wait until that was available, I'd look at a 9-5Wagon or another brand.
