Very much like you on the fact that the Viggen to me is the closest recent version of what I consider more classic Saab lines. Personally I like the look of the late 99s and I think the 9-3 coupe has a modern 99 like styling. The new 9-3 SS is OK and I do like the look of the 9-5, but find the hatch more useful on the Viggen.
That said I love the Viggen -- I went 00 Viggen Coupe > 02 Aero > 99 Viggen
I liked the aero, but I like the Viggen more and the payments are less;)
I really wanted a lightening blue coupe so I was limited mainly to 1999 and 2000. Finding a 2000 lightening blue coupe is very hard -- should never have sold the 2000 I had...thats another story. While I own a 1999 I would rather have had the engine in the 2000 which has some minor tweaks. The TCS is really the only considerable extra in 01 and 02.
I would recommend buying one that still has a tad of warranty so that you can work out any kinks before the warranty expires. My 2000 was flawless for the 15000 miles I had it and my 1999 Viggen is now running great, but I did need to work out some suspension, rattles, and other little warranty issues upon purchase.
When your looking be sure to check for bent rims/bad alignment. Thats the biggest pain in the back. Also as others state the front chin spoiler is very low. I just keep the tire pressure high and the spoiler away from the end of the parking space and it works out well.
