You're right...I was using an out-of-date decoder that didn't have H and K. It also didn't have an F option in position 5, which is the SE designator.
So the answer is, a base model in the US will have both a D in the 5th position (for base model) and an N in the 8th position (for the 185 hp engine). The SE has an F in the 5th position and a P in the 8th position.
Here's a question: Viggen designator is a P in the 5th position. According to Taliaferro's information, in 2000 and 2001, the Viggen/Aero engine was a G in the 8th position. However, they don't list the Viggen/Aero engine on the 1999 decoder. Was it still a G? Who's got a '99 Viggen?
