This description is for the teardown only. I haven't received my new parts yet to put it back together.
-crack lug bolts, and use the 32mm socket to crack the axle nut (this was super tight) while the car is on the ground.
-jack up both sides and USE JACKSTANDS!!! Don't be dumb about this either.
-remove wheel, remove caliper bracket bolts and hang caliper from spring with wire.
-remove rotor set screw (or drill out it it's a PITA). Lighty tap off rotor.
-remove nut holding on front sway bar.
-remove speed sensor. (This may not be necessary as it was not in the way)
-loosen (but don't remove - cuz you won't be able to anyways) nut that fastens ball joint and wheel hub.
-Use pickle fork and tap it in between lower control arm and wheel hub until tappered area of ball joint pops out of wheel hub. Now, the nut from above can come out.
-Use rubber mallot, while tapping the end of the axle in through the hub, pull on the bottom of the strut so the axle will fall through.
-If you remove inner large boot clamp now, the whole axle, minus the companion flange will come out and you can clean area and observe any wear/damage to the companion flange.

upon 1st inspection my boots looked OK, though I did notice I had gobs of grease below that inner joint. Anyone know where to get new Inner Boot Kit? Eeuroparts doesn't have.

James, torque wrench is out of the question for me. I used an open ended wrench to lossen, and plan on doing the same, but with a pipe on the end for added leverage. I'll prolly get a new grade 8 nut since I rashed the old one coming off. I'll just go by feel.

JoeR, this is the 1st time I've inspected this area of the car. All other boots look fine, and so did this one. I honestly think the tripod bearing popped before the companion flange started to wear because the one bearing that popped had the worst wear at the companion flange by far.

Jeff, Yeah, who know really, what happened 1st, the chicken or the egg???
job isn't too bad yet. "Yet" key word. I'm not looking forward to getting those boot clamps tight. Any pointers? I don't feel like buying the tool. I hope the other side is OK, still feels tight after yanking all around on it...

wish me luck...
