I'm just BSing here, because I haven't had to do anything yet with the steering...
On our old '89 900, the steering rack piston seals leaked out into the rubber rack boots. The rubber accordion things you can see in the rack bolted to the firewall. Those boots should be filled with air, not steering fluid.
The steering column / pinion shaft enters the steering rack somehow hidden at the firewall? I'll try to remember to take a look... If it's leaking there, maybe it'll soak into that foam soundproofing on the firewall?? Or maybe it'll soak into the matting under the carpet inside??? Maybe PatPrice or someone knows where that one would leak...
