There shouldn't be anything venting to atmosphere around your exhaust. There is at least one O2 sensor back there (pre and probably post catalytic converter), but they have no valving to leak - they are basically plugs. I doubt it has anything to do with your turbo and associated ducting, because there would be other more noticeable symptoms. My guess is that it has something to do with your air injection lines. I am not sure about your model, but most of these cars have air injection for cold-start emission control. Your symptoms seem to point to a leak in that system.
So, you start the car on a cold day. Since the catalyst works best hot, air is injected into the exhaust manifold after exiting the cylinder head. This is coupled with increased amounts of fuel to "light-off" the catalyst. Once the catalyst is up to operating temperature or some set time goes by, additional air is no longer required. There is a pump that probably pulls air from you airbox. This pump is what feeds the air injection lines. As stated earlier, it will only run as required and then only for a short period of time. That may explain your intermittent problem.
