"The internet does a good job of skewing the reality behind the DI cassette. The fact of the matter is, 60 to 70% of cars will go their entire lives on the original DI, and of the ones let MANY will go 100K miles before needing a replacement. The problem is not as widespread as it been made out to seem. There is no need for premature replacement of the cassette, but keeping one in the trunk might be a good insurance policy."
So he did say that keeping one in the trunk is a good idea which leads me to believe that he downplayed the problem but at the same time it put me more at ease that the DI - though they fail - are generally reliable. He made an analogy to a car battery - sometimes they last 7 or 8 years and sometimes they go bad in 2 or 3 years.
