The car would lose power while driving... I'd be doing 65 MPH and the car would shut down and go into Limp Home Mode....it was driving me nuts. I took it to a dealer, and they replaced the idler pulley and the serpentine belt. They said that would fix it. It didn't. Turns out I needed a new alternator too.

Our company uses a local shop (STS), and they put in a "new" (aka rebuilt) alternator. Everything has been fine since then. No more of the squealing noise, and no more losing power.

John and Mark make good recommendations -- make sure to get the idler pulley and serp belt taken care of. But if you end up needing a new alternator, I've had great luck with the rebuilt OEM one that they put in my car.

All of this happened to me at about 80K.
