I truly sympathize with you all. We all want our cars to last hundreds of thousands of miles. However, I probably agree with SAAB that this wear and tear is normal. We are talking about a piece of fabric being required to be folded into a very small space where it will come into contact with other fabric or mechanisms.
My best friend has a 2001 Porsche Boxster. It has worn "fuzzy" areas on each rear quarter panel of the convertible top. He went onto the Porsche boards and it appears to be a common problem. Porsche also takes the position that it is normal wear and tear.
One of my neighbors has a late 90's Mercedes SL. It developed similar wear spots on the top while it was still under warranty. Mercedes deemed it to be normal wear and tear.
My Porsche friend says that the Porsche boards suggest using a sheepskin to buffer the top when it folds. They refer to the technique as the "Boxster Chop." You partly lower the top, go back to fold the material neatly and place the sheepskin in the folds, then continue to fully lower the top. The sheepskin acts as a soft buffer between the folds of top fabric. Additionally, the earlier Boxsters have a plastic rear window, and the sheepskin keeps the windows from getting scratched by contact with top fabric.
