A few weeks ago I posted about a Idle problem (300 rpm drop & recover) and Dean gave a couple of ideas: clean throttle body, plugs, air filter.
Before I cold do any of this I took a road trip up to Dallas and about 3/4 of the way there, the motor cut out. It would start but not idle and would only stay running with a full throttle. I am not a great mechanic, and the motor was hotter than hell from the driving so I had it towed to the dealer in Dallas. Verdict was a hose came loose from the TB. They also cleaned the TB. The computer check showed no issues with the DI.
When got home, I checked the plugs and the gap had eroded to 0.050". The color looked good so I just regapped and reinstalled. I decided to go ahead and replace took me several days to find them (NGK BCPR6ES).
Filter was dirty and I spent the same time looking for the plugs also looking for a K&N. I finally ordered off the net and installed.
End result was the car ran much better. Before doing the work the check engine light would come on about 25% of the time when starting up. I assumed this to be plugs (frequency went down when new installed) and the air filter (disappearred for two weeks after install). I had an occasional stutter but no rpm drop while idling.
Then the check engine light came back on and would not go away. In to the dealer.
The service advisor (SA) came back with a misfire on cylinders 1 & 4 due to the DI. He wanted $715 for a new DI, plugs ($15 each), and new software to keep the DI lasting longer. I am thinking B*&%^*&t!! I will get hold of the area tech rep to talk about the DI.
I told him I had just replaced the plugs for $2 a piece and he asked me if they were platinum. I told same ones he put in for the 30K mile check up. I was thinking from my reading on this board that plats were a no-no.
I told him I could not afford that work right now (I am job free right now) and the car was running fine except for the CE light. I then told him the story as above. He came back a few minutes later and said the DI and plugs would be goodwill and $95. I figured a new DI for $95 was a good deal so I went with that. However, I forgot to ask what plugs he put in so I will have to check (not on the paperwork).
I can think of a couple of reasons for the goodwill. The dealer has done most of the work on this Viggen (except for a couple of oil changes) so he knew the history. The other thought is that the dealers have been told to replace the DIs gratis. My 2001 has 55K miles so I would not call it overdriven. I tip my hat to the SA on this one and I do recommend Roger Beasley SAAB in Austin. They have a brand new place on the north side and it is something to behold.
