Re-torque the head

The 1999 models had a problem with improper head bolt torque at the factory. Replacing the head gasket and changing the oil can cost you $1000-1500 dollars, especialy if you fix a lot of the incidental things at the same time.

Why not attempt to re-torqe the headbolt first, then change the oil and see if that get rid of the leaks and whit smoke. You can do this your self for under $50. If it does nto work than you can still pay to have it replaced.

I re-torqued my 1999 in September and the bolts were loose, but not to the point where they leaked or allowed water into the oil. The whole thing took me just under an hour.

Attached is a weblink to the instructions on re-torqueing. YOU WILL NEED a special socket E-16 or E-18. Call your Saab dealer or maybe you foreign parts store for this.
