Thanks so much for the time and input guys. My car doesn't have any symptoms of a problem; no hard starting, no extra cranking, no running roughly, makes normal boost, and the plugs are less than 5,000 miles old; it seems like all the information presented in this thread implicates or at least does not exonerate the DI unit.

I'll buy a new unit online and if it turns out that's not the problem, then I'll just use it as a spare, since the DI will inevitably fail eventually. if it's the crank angle sensor or something like that I can't DIY that anyhow.

If it DOES turn out to be the DI unit I feel very very lucky that mine failed with warning!!!!!!
