I never gave this much thought until I experienced it myself.
I believe that SAAB should recall this component of the 9-3/9-5 line. My DI cassette died on New Year's day while attempting to pull away from a stop sign into traffic. Fortunately I didn't make it into the intersection before the car stalled and wouldn't restart.
What scares me is that this component could fail at highway speeds in rush hour traffic. It seems exceedingly dangerous and makes me question why this has not been made a bigger issue. The manufacturer knows the parts fail, sometimes without warning, and when they do they can leave the car and its occupants in a very vulnerable situation.
Why has SAAB not at least produced a newer cassette that doesn't do this? Is the overall design of the ignition system such that a "prone-to-failure" part is required? Mine died around 31400 miles. I know that all cars have points of failure that can leave the car powerless in traffic, but here you have a situation where a part, at some point, is likely to do so. It seems only a matter of time before SAAB finds themselves in a nasty lawsuit when someone is seriously injured by this.
Just curious what others think or if I'm just too close to it with my recent experience. FWIW, SAAB Roadside Assistance was excellent.
