The last car we drove for any length of time was an '89 Bonneville
with a 3.8 litre V6 engine. This vehicle never wanted exhaust repairs
throughout its life. This was explained to me by a mechanic by saying
the 3.8 is a 'hot-burning' engine and therefore its exhaust system
is purged of moisture, even if most of the driving consisted of short
hops around town.
The Saab, he said, is a cool-burning engine which tends to let
condensation sit in the exhaust under similar driving conditions,
thereby tending to attract rust and need replacement parts more
often.
