A/C compressor failed (big time)

Two days ago I reported here that the A/C on my 2000 9-3 stopped working while on the highway following a loud "clunk" that seemed to come from the engine copartment. Well, the guy from the indy repair shop called back today to say he found the cause...the compressor blew a 3" hole in the side of the compressor wall ejecting its innards against the fender wall in engine compartment!
So, in addition to the compressor, a couple of other attached parts need to be replaced, as well as the cooling system cleaned out of all the metal shards. Estimate is $1800, which oddly enough is about what I paid for the AAA MemberCare extended warranty on my 9-3. I had two years and about 14,000 miles left on the warranty and it just paid for itself (after first paying out for a new DI cassette last year).
I asked the guy from the indy shop if he had ever seen anything like this before and he said no. His guess is that the compressor was defective from the factory since they normally do not fail in this catastrophic a fashion. He said I was fortunate that there does not appear to be any other damage to other systems in the engine compartment.
