I did the short belt mod first, and realized that I was getting rid of a lower idler made by Dayco that showed almost no wear and replacing a worn out upper idler with a part that would wear just as fast.
I called Dayco and they kindly let me talk to someone at their tech center who helped to confirm what I found and explain the bearing life a little more and what was happening.
There is nothing unique about idler pulleys with the same groove pattern, so I decided to go with a larger pulley to reduce the rotation speed, and a standard bearing (like the one used in the lower idler and tensioner) which is replaceable at a cost of about $4-5.
I knew the Mustang pulleys had the same groove pattern and the right type of bearing. I ordered one from Wazee Pulleys because that is what a search on ebay came up with.
The 2603-type bearing requires a bearing insert to reduce the inside diameter, also from Wazee pulleys, and a steel washer from a hardware store for the Saab oem bolt wich is M8x125 by 35 mm long.
The pulley I ordered had to be machined because it had nice shiny oversized flanges which did not fit. The clearance between the pulley and the mounting arm is too close.
The original pulley is 64 mm in dia x 24 mm wide
The new one is 74 mm in dia x 25 mm wide after machining (31 mm before)
When I spoke to the owner of Wazee Pulleys later he explained the Vette pulley would have been a better choice, but of course I did not ask him for advice until AFTER I found out the Mustang pulley was too wide (!).
