Hello,
After a hiatus on an island gathering data on birds, I am back to discuss cars. It is a nice way to delay actually looking at all that data...
I am approaching the need to replace my stock shocks on my 1999 SE HOT at 70K miles. The rear suspension is beginning to feel pretty wooden, and the shocks are leaking a larger amount of oil than usual. As usual, I have a slough of questions, and am soliciting thoughts and advice.
1. How long do the stock springs last? Should I consider replacing these as long as I'm getting dirty under the car? Lowering the car would probably not be practical for my snowy dirt-road driving, so I'd probably just replace my springs with the stock SE ones.
2. What other parts need replacing with the shocks, and how do I tell if the mounts are bad?
3. I'm considering replacing the worn stock shocks with Bilstein HD shocks, or possibly springing for the Konis. I am a red-blooded young male who drives too fast, so I am willing to trade a modicum of comfort for a more controlled ride. However, the roads here in Ithaca are crap, and I make regular forays to New York City, so I wanted to hear some opinions of those who are running stock springs and Bilsteins in snowy, hilly, bumpy climes. I am also curious as to how long Konis last with stock springs, as the opinions I dredged up on the board were conflicting.
Thanks for any information or advice you can offer, and have fun passing the SUV's in the snow!
Best,
Lutfisk
