IMHO replacing or turning rotors is a grossly abused practice that many shops use to jack up service costs.

My '99 9-3 has 70K miles and I haven't touched the rotors, nor do I see any indication that I will need to anytime in the future. I have owned two cars previous to my Saab that each racked up over 200K miles, and I didn't replace or turn a rotor on either.

Having said that, it is true that newer cars (compaired to my previous cars of the 60's and 80's) have thinner disks to reduce cost and unsprung weight. The result of this is that the thinner disks can warp easier, and there is not enough extra material to allow turning.

Of course if you let your brake pads wear down to the point of metal to metal contact, the rotor can easily be damaged beyond repair.
