The transmission is downshifting as I come to a stop, but that isn't what I am feeling. It does it even after I have come to a full stop and let the car roll forward slowly in first, then brake again. It stays in first the entire time but I get the weird lurching/uneven feeling. It doesn't do this in neutral.
Here is a good case of when it happens vs. doesn't happen. I was in traffic yesterday pointing down-hill towards a stoplight. It took a few cycles to get through the light. With the car in drive, every time I let off the brake to roll forward, the brakes felt bad. When I say "bad" I mean it felt very uneven, and not smooth or linear at all. When I switched the car into neutral, it felt fine to roll forward and brake. No unevenness at all. Nice smooth braking, and easier to judge how far I was stopping from the bumper in front of me by applying a set amount of force. When it is in drive, it seems like I am always guessing what amount of braking force will stop me where. This is really a damn shame because the car feels like it could potentially brake pretty well if I could figure out what the cause of all of this trouble was.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get a look at the transmission mount(s?) on a 9-3 without hoisting it up? I have found reference on this board to a bad transmission mount causing various problems, one of which is a lot of shuddering when reverse is engaged. I have that problem too, and wonder if all of this is somehow related.
Thanks for the help.
