They were in fact behind the front seats and not in between. The only issue I had was that the handle on the rear facing seat could not be swung underneath the seat as is suggested in the car sear owners manual. So it was left partialy up and I joked that my daughters had roll bars!
I while ago someone posted a picture of a viggen convertible with two infants in rear facing car seats, it looked tight but they fit no problem. I think I kept that picture i should see if I can find it.
