I've driven a couple 2001 and 02 9-3 SE's as a potential replacement for my NG900, $15k/37k miles and about $16k/43k miles, both with some factory warranty left. There are lots to choose from on the market, often with bad SID displays and AC problems (can't tell in winter). I would NOT pay 15k for one w/o some type of warranty, even very short.
I've seen a few bent rims on NG900 and 9-3 turbos with 16-inch wheels in Wisconsin and Ill (including two of mine), one bad pothole in winter will do it. Very fragile rims. Usual procedure seems to be to move the bad rim to the back until you have two, and then replace them as a pair. If the car has been on bent rims for a while, the tire tread will tell. Or, ice on the rim.
Less road feel more wheel hop in the 9-3 than the old C900, not as many rattles though. C900 owners sometimes don't like NG900/9-3 handling and body roll in tight turns. On bad roads, struts and shocks could be close to giving out at 80k, so could the water pump and alternator.
The 9-3 SE seems to have no more power in 2nd than the NG900, 3rd and 4th are best gears. Notchy shifter on some, smooth on other cars, not sure why. Leaks in the compressed air delivery system, as well as old plugs tend to cause lower pwr. Seat heaters often break, make sure you have those for MI driving.
