I had the temperature sensor replaced on Wednesday since I started getting intermittent fluctuations in the engine temperature. Figured that this would be an easy fix. It was too cold in Chicago to DIY without a garage so I brought my car to a local indy that only works on Saabs. However, after driving from Chicago to South Bend yesterday I noticed that the problem continues.
The gage slowly dips from normal temperature (middle of the gage) down and then rises over a period of 2 to 3 minutes, returning back to normal temperature. Sometimes it makes it back down into the L range, but not always.
Temperature never rises above normal.
Cabin heat has never been a problem.
First couple of times I saw the problem was after the car sat outside for several day in below freezing weather (0F to 25 F). Now the problem is more frequent and less dependant on how long the car has sat without being driven or outside temperature.
During last service (100k) my indy mentioned that it looked like I had a leak in the heater core. I’ve been watching my coolant reservoir, but it’s never seems to be loosing fluid. Haven’t smelled coolants in the cabin either.
After the car reached normal temperature on my first drive with the new sensor I had a coffee/espresso smell followed by a burnt oven smell (when what you cook overflows onto the oven floor) from the A/C system. The smell went away after 5 minutes.
Is my new sensor bad or can someone else think of another cause of my engine temperature problems?
