I get the dreaded "*Soft Top Failure" messages every once in a while. Usually this happens and the top won't go up. So, even though it is down I toggle the switch down until I hear the beep then try to put it up and it usually works. I figure it has something to do with it not going down all the way the last time I put it down.
If you have the "check the trunk" message make sure the straps that hold the expandable bag that holds the top when it's down are loosened all the way. I spent a 1/2 hour once fighting the straps to get the top to go down.
Last night I had a different scenario. I put the top up and it was really difficult to close. The top motors made a ton of straining noises. So, I retracted it a bit and tried again. When retracting it I got the dreaded "*Soft Top Failure" message. So I tried putting it up again. This time it got close enough to the top of the windshield for me to close it. *Ugh*.
Now I am worried it's not going to go down again. It was pretty warm on the way home so I had the top down (50*F or so) but by the time I got home it was 34*F. I hope operating the top in the cold didn't screw it up. When this happened on my BMW 328iC it cost me $900.
