I've driven well over 1,000,000 miles using stick shift cars - a few basics will ensure long life for your gearbox and clutch.
1) If you're at a stop sign or in a situation where you're gonna sit say longer than 15 seconds, shift into neutral and take your foot off the clutch
2) Try not to ride the clutch.
3) Don't use the clutch to hold yourself on a hill
4) When going from neutral to either first or reverse, go into second first(if that makes sense). Going from neutral directly to reverse gives a bit of a "grind" which spells transmission rebuild.
If you live where the traffic is tough, you may regret a stick shift, but they put the fun back in driving - esp here in the upper Midwest where snow and ice present unique challenges. Best part is most people your age don't know how to drive sticks so your friends will never ask to borrow your car !! hehehe
